FAQ’s
I’ve never talked to a therapist. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak and unable to handle things on their own?
Not at all! In fact, it’s just the opposite. People who choose to ask for help have a lot of courage to do so. The reality is, everyone needs a little help now and then with things that happen in our lives that might be a little out of our comfort zone for one reason or another. In our work together, I will listen without judgement, help you identify and explore your strengths, and work together in helping you find a way to implement solutions with the intention of reducing the influence in the struggles you are facing.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
The difference is that a mental health professional who is experienced in working with contextual issues between people can remain neutral and not biased about your situation. This person can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself and what it is that you really want. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, and in some circumstances, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you explore and accomplish your personal goals.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Because each person struggles with different things, it will be different depending on the individual, couple, or family. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.
How long will it take to start feeling better?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQ’s page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on many factors including your desire for personal exploration and development, your commitment to the outcome, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to make the process faster?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions! Your active participation and dedication to the process will be crucial to your success.
